THE FREE FORMS
OF MUSIC

- JUST MUSIC -

the FREE FORMS of music are, so to speak, the adventure within music including the audience; listening actively, the audience is in the midst of the creative process.

FREE FORM means direct communication, intensive mutual attentiveness and acceptance, it is based on openness and the readiness of the artists to meet halfway, to exchange views within the process and even change it; the permanent attempt to enter into a dialogue in a constructive and creative way, to communicate.
a communication between single persons who are conscious of themselves and the others, the running process. this creative making of music implies comprehensive self-reflexion and happens in the framework of a collective-hierarchical discourse.
this also includes that the he/she individual "egomaniacally" takes his/her space/place, places himself/herself in the center and also restrains himself/herself, acts supportively, immerses sociatively into the community; a collective without a conductor, in which the artist here and there places an idea in the center and inspires new momentum.
since the participating artists are technically brilliant musicians, a profound and multilayered discourse becomes possible. a creative interaction, which goes far beyond music. and this multilayered discourse at a complex and high level makes it possible to create a fresh work of art; in a joint action.
this way of making music casts a spell on musicians coming from the most different genres (jazz, rock, classical music, reggae, underground, worldmusic, blues, free jazz etc…). out of this cornucopia of worldmusic they contribute undogmatically to the FREE FORM.
the creative action is directly linked with the way of life, the philosophy of life of the participants*.

EVERYTHING ON DIALOGUE!!!

*many of us think that artists can participate in this process in a constructive and formative way, when they are "FREE" (with integrity?? authentic??). we think that this is first of all no absolute, a state to be pinned down, no measurable unit; once again, it's always about the process. it must be determined again and again by participants and listeners as well, whether the participants are conscious of the process and want to stay conscious; whether they experience themselves in a process, let themselves flow; whether they want to get into a flowing state, whether they are in the TO BE or rather move in that direction. whether they question themselves, criticize, face criticism or whether they experience themselves in a relation to the infinity of the at this moment comprehensible space and the infinity of times.

FREE FORMS
was, is and will be
(UDO PREIS and ELIAS GROSS)

each "act" of the artists of the FREE FORM" is a concert, a manifestation of their creativity, their artistic existence, their art, their comprehensive musical/dancing knowledge, and also their lifestyle; their philosophy of life.
The facts are that from the Sixties on a seperate direction of making music has been developing;in direct connection to it there are musicians like derek bailey, paul rutherford, paul rogers, paul dunmall, matthias schubert, tristan honsiger, herb robertson, maggie nichols, axel dörner, paul lovens, but also evan parker, phil minton, alexander v. Schlippenbach and more. a new "style" in music that visibly moved away from all kinds of jazz/freejazz/improvised music/fluxus movement/soundpainting.
a kind of making music that cannot be classified clearly and precisely, being so diverse as the number of musicians, who are able to move into this complex dialogue due to their comprehensive musical knowledge and virtuosity and before all to want it.

the FORMS of "free performing, dancing, thinking, painting …" has been existing since the very beginning of creativity of man. in the last decades there were some basic changes, influenced by

  • the radical political development over the last 200 years
  • also on the basis of a complex philosophical development in the most different countries, going hand in hand with a dissolution of institutions,
  • by becoming aware of the unconscious (freud, reich …), by the recognition of the "universe of senses" and
  • by globalisation and knowledge of transcendent forms (the general knowledge of the chinese chi, the indian prana, the orgon and so on …. et cetera).
also the role of artists and everything that belongs to it, has changed. it would lead too far to critically examine here all these ideas, but

    IT'S A FACT that:

    THE FREE PLAY,
THE COMPEXITY OF THE ARTISTIC DIALOGUE,
THE POSSIBILITIES OF CREATIVE MINDS TO MOVE TO A WIDE RANGE
OF INTERSECTIONS OF THE SOCIETY, TO UNRAVEL THE KNOTS AND
MAKE THEM CONSCIOUS, HAVE CHANGED FUNDAMENTALLY OVER THE LAST YEARS,
    have become multidimensional
    more complex, more holistic!!
    and all this
    in exact opposition to
    the momentary movement direction of
    consumer-oriented
    one dimension.
    mono-culture!!!
